Calypso gets dry....  BOttom paint lasting very well !Calypso takes a rideView of Calypso from the hill before she's set in place5 days of cleanup, protective polishing/waxing, putting gear and sails away....Lookin' shiny!Neighborhood of cats!  (Much nicer than monohulls, which tend to fall over in storms!)Stripped and cleaned.   She will also have special sand-screw tie-down straps as added safety in case of hurricanes.Calypso's summer home, as I fly back to Maine....Calypso has special tie-down straps to make her extra-comfy during hurricane season!And her neighbors are all cats, also with tie-downs....!  Costs extra to do this, but it is the BEST insurance....

LAUNCHED!:  Nov 9, 2009  Cruising the Virgins (AND St. Martin, Anguilla....) once again!! 
Mast steps make it easy to climb and check on things, re-rig windex + jacklines, and the views are GREAT!!!Even 'on the hard' we have lots of solar power to run refrigerator and power tools needed to get things cleaned up.  Gas stove allows MaryAnne to make wonderful meals.A typcial Virgin Island sunset - Nov 10, 2009.... We LOVE this place......Coming ashore on Dog Island after night sail from BVIs... Front-row seats to another caribbean adventure.Capt Ahab prepares to lance the great white...... mooring ball..... PITs  (Pirates In Training)Aragorn delivers bread, veggies, t-shirts..... Trellis Bay, BVIs - nice art, great spot.A 30 minute sunset light-show almost every night!Some locals do their best work at night (moonlighting), then play music, sing and share wine and recipes....Other locals just know how to chill.... and fish....There are lots of lovely, sometimes challenging hikes in the Virgins...Our friend Larry offers private day charters on his (smaller) Catana catamaran for about $700.Other folks pay $70/each to do a 1/2 day snorkel on a 'Cattlemaran'. Still others are happy to share a slightly larger boat with 3000 other guests....  (but, heck, they're ALL good ways to have fun in the Carib!)The BIG BOATS are especially lovely at night.And, of course, there are those who want like to live FAST >>>>>>>>>>>>>
Yes, this really does exist in the Virgins, yes he can move, and yes, he did scare the beegeez out of us!  Anyone know where he hides???These creatures are much more common and very shy, but still scary to some folks..Moravian Church, St. Johns. Lots of wonderful churches in the Carib, many with good gospel singing.  Sunday church is a way to meet the local community.Cave snorkelling off Norman Island.  The special light is home to many different corals and fish.Remove the table, and the cockpit becomes a dance hall for Senior Samba and the Admiral.  Note festive towel decor.....Local Calypso sensation - Capt. Calypso himself.... 'Nibbling on sponge cake.....'Sometimes the local band needs help....  usually not!!!!All Calypso visitors are required to pass the Conch horn blowing test - before and after their required Margratini (Rum punch optional). The Baths are a magical place - almost a mile of huge wind+rain-carved boulders stacked randomly in soft blue waters over white sands.VERY Bubbly pool - Jost Van DykeThe 'Panther' and PITS (pirates in training)  (Note the skins are NOT for cold - the water is lovely ALL year round (not like Bahamas). San Juan, Puerto Rico - Wonderful Old-world CharmGreat walks along the fort walls.San Juan also has large hotels and beautiful beaches, many just minutes from the airport. El Yunque Rain Forest has miles of well managed trails just 30 minutes from San Juan.Some days we are a motor boat!  Here we're heading to Vieques...Another artsy sunset...Cell phone reception is VERY good in almost all parts of the islands.Vieques is famous for its Bioluminescent Bay - we WERE amazed.... Makes you feel like a blessed creature from 'Avatar'...Tramps are ideal for star gazing away from city lights....But bring stellarium.com software so you can identify the constellations!Gotta keep up that 'tennis' form...... beautiful Flamenco beach, CulebraBattling local coconuts......Worth it!Local resident - CulebritaCulebrita Lighthouse is the coolest ruin in the Carib!St. Thomas offers great old city alleys, restaurants, a fine spot to chill if it rains.... (which it rarely does......)but rain brings RAINBOWS....Saturday morning market - St. ThomasIn case you can't catch your own!  (Like us!)And, yes, it IS possible to find GOOOOOOOOD machiatto here in the islands!St. Johns has many bays, dozens of hikes, snorkeling, and very few people - one of our favorite destinations.We spend a lot of time fishing, less time catching........But, even in bad weather, Calypso keeps us comfy, safe and thrilled to be sharing our continuing adventures with friends and family.
